Paintings

While living in Mykonos, Greece my husband painted everyday, producing over 110 paintings, numerous drawings, as well as, photographs. Below are some of his “sketch book” and “studio” watercolor paintings. Should you visit Mykonos many hang in Notorius a local restaurant bar which serves Mediterranean cuisine. Notorius also has his “for sale” portfolio since we were backpacking and could not carry the large format works with us.

We visited seven different islands while in Greece. No two islands were the same, each having different local characteristics, architecture, and cultural identities. In the 1960’s the push for nationalism was marked by the white/blue colors seen in the Greek flag, now found throughout Greek buildings. When the blue paint ran out, red was also used - thus the local chapels and churches have differing colors. Green is a third dominant color for decoration.

Dove cotes are a distinct architectural design from Venice, Italy. As the name implies, dove cotes were built to house doves for excrement fertilizer and serve as a food source. Dove Cotes also served as a utility shed for farmer’s tools.

Sketchbook paintings were 8x11” and executed “plein aire”

Studio paintings were 18x24” and executed in our makeshift studio at the kitchen table
